Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) was established in 1982 as Andhra Pradesh Open University by the  AP State Legislature (APOU Act, 1982)  and later renamed in 1991. It is accredited by the UGC-DEB board for supporting distance education in India.  It was founded to offer higher education to candidates who are unable to pursue conventional education due to various personal or professional reasons. This university stands on the vision and mission of a social reformer Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar who advocated education equality in India.
